[Ohio UZO News] President Yushchenko calls on each citizen to light a candle to honor the innocent victims of Holodomor

      У День вшанування жертв Голодомору Президент закликає кожного українця засвітити свічку в пам'ять про загиблих

      Від сьогодні в Україні розпочинається поминальний тиждень за мільйонами жертв  Голодомору, заявив Віктор Ющенко сьогодні під час презентації відеокліпу Оксани Білозір «Свіча», присвяченого трагедії 1932 – 1933 років. 

      «Мені б дуже хотілося, щоб в ці дні Українська нація мала велике серце», – сказав В. Ющенко, наголосивши, що нинішнє покоління має глибоко усвідомити масштаб пережитого Україною лихоліття і зробити все для збереження пам’яті про загиблих. У зв’язку з цим Президент закликав кожного українця в День вшанування жертв Великого голоду засвітити свічку на знак шани загиблих. 

      Глава держави відзначив непростий процес визнання трагедії Голодомору не лише світовою, але й українською спільнотою, зокрема деякими політиками: «Мене боляче дивує, що та дорога визнання, якою йде Українська нація, є надзвичайно складною... Прикро, що світова спільнота не знає цілого масиву з подій 1932-1933 років, але більш прикро, що сама нація не хоче про це знати». «Цей шрам у нашій моралі, у нашій духовності, людяності буде ще на багато поколінь», – зазначив В. Ющенко.

      У цьому контексті Глава держави відзначив важливість встановлення історичної правди про тогочасні події, зокрема кількості жертв, загиблих у роки Голодомору в Україні. «Нам треба йти дорогою, яка б привела нас до правди 1932 – 1933 років», – підкреслив він, додавши водночас, що цей процес, безумовно, не буде легким.  

      В. Ющенко висловив вдячність авторам і організаторам презентації за їх високу громадянську позицію та небайдужість до трагедії 1932 – 1933 р.р., а також присутньому на заході першому Президенту України Леоніду Кравчуку, за часів керівництва якого в нашій державі в 1992 році було встановлено перший Пам’ятний знак жертвам Голодомору.

      President attends music video presentation

      President Victor Yushchenko on Friday attended a presentation of Oksana Bilozir’s music video devoted to Ukraine’s Great Famine of 1932-1933, A Candle. 

      “I really want the Ukrainian nation to have a big heart on these days,” he said and added that Ukraine would be commemorating the victims of the Soviet-era famine next week. 

      Yushchenko urged all Ukrainians to appreciate the scale of all hardships survived by their ancestors and spare no effort to preserve the memory of these people. He called on each citizen to light a candle next week to honor the innocent victims of the Holodomor.

      He said the Holodomor recognition process was not easy, both abroad and in Ukraine. “I am surprised and it hurts me that the recognition path the Ukrainian nation is walking is very difficult. […] It is sad that the international community does not know many facts about the events of 1932-1933 but it is even more sad that the nation does not want to know about it. […] This scar in our morality, in our spirituality and humaneness will remain for many generations,” he said. 

      The president said we must learn the truth about the famine and added this would not be easy. 

      He then thanked the authors and organizers of the presentation and also Leonid Kravchuk, Ukraine’s first president, as the country’s first Holodomor monument was unveiled during his presidency, in 1992.
