·        Senate Resolution in Support of NATO Membership Action Plan for Ukraine

 

On January 31, Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN), the Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, together with the Committee Chairman Joseph Biden (D-DE), proposed S. Res. 439, urging the government of the United States to support Ukraine’s effort to join NATO and actively cooperate with its allies to develop a Membership Action Plan (MAP) for Ukraine.  Our community should actively support Ukraine’s initiative and urge our elected officials in the Senate to support this resolution.  

 

For your convenience, below please find a sample letter, which you are welcome to modify or use with no alterations.  The Ukrainian National Information Service (UNIS) urges the Ukrainian community to unite behind this cause and send as many letters as possible to your Senators. 31-го січня ц.р., Сенатор Ричард Луґар (Респ-Індіана), найстарший республіканець у Комітеті Закордонних Відносин Сенату США, разом із Головою цього Комітету, Сенатором Джозефом Байденом (Дем-Делавер), запропонував резолюцію  S. Res 439, яка закликає уряд США підтримати прагнення України вступити в НАТО і активно працювати зі союзниками для опрацювання Пляну Дій щодо Членства України в альянсі.  Наша громада повинна активно підтримати ініціятиву України  та звернутися до своїх представників в Сенаті з проханням підтримати цю резолюцію.

As a Ukrainian American, I closely follow political life in Ukraine.  On January 11, the President, Prime Minister, and Speaker of Parliament of Ukraine signed a letter to NATO’s Secretary General requesting that a Membership Action Plan be extended to Ukraine at the NATO Bucharest summit in April.  This step is momentous for Ukraine, as it symbolizes the ongoing effort of integration into the Euro-Atlantic community and the democratic community. Numerous American politicians and presidential candidates expressed their support of this initiative.

 

On January 31, Senators Lugar and Biden proposed S.Res. 439 expressing the strong support of the Senate for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to enter into a Membership Action Plan (MAP) with Georgia and Ukraine. As your constituent, I urge you to co-sponsor this resolution and encourage the U.S. Government to take a leading role in assisting Ukraine in this important endeavor.  In the last several years, Ukraine has proven time and again that it has become a fully democratic state. It has achieved significant progress in reforming its legislation to international standards. The international community should recognize these achievements.

 

By joining this resolution, you will demonstrate the support of Ukraine’s effort to further integrate into the Euro-Atlantic community, assist the Ukrainian people in realizing their goal of building a strong and prosperous state, as well as help foster a strong strategic partnership between Ukraine and the United States. I appreciate your attention to this matter and hope to see your name among the co-sponsors of this important legislation.
